Position Summary

The Head Night Cleaner assists the Chief Housekeeper to efficiently run the Housekeeping Department during the night, in line with the company rules and regulations.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities


  • Maintain cleanliness of assigned area.
  • Supervise the night shift cleaning operation.
  • Inspect all designated areas for compliance with company standards.
  • Ensure that subordinates follow assigned schedules and complete tasks according to job description and management directives.
  • Ensure that team is punctual, well groomed and in proper uniform when reporting for duty.
  • Training new crew members in company rules and regulations.
  • Provide orientation to sign-ons and new crew members regarding living environment.
  • Notify Chief Housekeeper or Assistant Chief Housekeeper of any discipline issues or poor performance.
  • Coach and evaluate subordinates.
  • Inventory and control all housekeeping consumables in assigned area.
  • Monitor the use, maintenance and storage of all machinery and equipment used during the night shift by the night UT team.
  • Report any technical issues to immediate supervisor/manager.
  • Respond to guest questions regarding itinerary, travel routes and ship services, displaying courtesy and appropriate etiquette.
  • Handle guest special requests and complaints, and forward to the Chief Housekeeper or Assistant Chief Housekeeper.
  • Supervise the collection, proper handling, storing and off-loading of luggage for disembarking guests, assigning the necessary number of workers.
  • Complete special projects during the night shift according to instructions from the Chief Housekeeper.
  • Ensures Personal protective equipment is used and proper procedures and instructions are followed at all times.
  • Ensure proper procedures are followed to avoid damage to ship or company property
  • Ensure cleanliness of guest areas assigned and completion of special cleaning assignments by the Chief Housekeeper, while maintaining company standards and Public Health regulations.
  • Ensure the cleanliness of assigned section, lockers and.
  • Check and update IPM (Integrated Pest Management).
  • Oversee the set up of the terminal on embarkation day.
  • Possess knowledge and ensure compliance with Shipsan, the European sanitation program, and the United States Public Health rules and regulations, pertaining to assigned work area.
  • Maintains personal appearance, personal hygiene, and uniform in accordance with the company rules and regulations.
  • Assures safe handling of equipment.

Training & Development

  • Attend all meetings, training activities or classes related to assigned position as required.

Safety Responsibilities

  • Maintain a safe and sanitary environment for all guests and crew members.
  • Follow proper procedures and instructions at all times to prevent damage of any kind to ship or company property.
  • Know and comply with Shipsan, the European sanitation program, and United States Public Health rules and regulations pertaining to assigned working area.
  • Participate in safety drills as required.
  • Comply with Marella Cruises’ Safety and Pollution Prevention Program

Knowledge, experience, skill, and/or ability


  • Fluent in written and spoken English,
  • Must be able to communicate effectively with the senior management.
  • Ability to lead and make decisions.
  • Good administrative skills.
  • Experienced in coaching subordinates.
  • Must be cost and quality conscious.
  • Must adhere to specific scheduled work hours, yet be flexible if circumstances require it.
  • Work with international team members.
  • Perform assigned duties under pressure (time constraints).


  • Fluency in additional languages


  • High School education preferred.
  • Minimum of two years related experience in hospitality field, preferably onboard cruise ships.
  • Equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Strong organizational, interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to interact with senior-level management and owner representatives.

  • Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
