Carpenter Supervisor

POSITION SUMMARY
This position is responsible for supervising the work ofthe Carpenters andupholsterers. The carpentry Supervisor is further responsible for the maintenance andgeneral repair of all furniture and carpeting on board the ship, as well as providingminor refurbishment’s and carpentry solutions for individual problem areas withinthe Hotel Department as directed by theHotel Maintenance Manager.The incumbentmust demonstrate an exceptionally positive attitude and the willingness to fullyparticipate in a dynamic team environment.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES &RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Serves as the daily work leader/immediate supervisor andcoordinator for theHotel MaintenanceCarpenters andUpholsterers.
2.Oversees the general maintenance of all woodwork, doors,locks, carpets, awnings/shades and furniture in the public areasas well as guest and crew cabins. This may include, but is notlimited to these activities: touch-up painting, varnishing,wallpapering, sewing, cutting, tacking and fitting.
3. Assists theHotel Maintenance Managerwith the ordering ofspare parts and materials. Consult with the Facilities StoreKeeper to ensure that adequate supplies are available for hiscrew.
4. Establishes a weeklyschedule for the routine maintenance ofthe vessel as it pertains to carpentry and associated repairs,taking into consideration the ports of call, time, port and localregulations.
5. Ensures that crew is using the proper safety and protectionequipment in daily operations and those critical working areasare sealed off from passengers and other crew.
6. Takes responsibility for proper on-the-job training for theCarpenters and Upholsterers as necessary. Provides additionalhands-on support in daily tasks.
7. Knows, follows and enforces SQM policies.
8. Attends mandatory crew and guest safety drills as required.
9. Maintains and encourages the “Anchored in Excellence” credoat all times.
10. Performs related duties as assigned by theHotel Maintenance Manager.
QUALIFICATIONS
Hiring Requirements:
Minimum hiring, language and physical requirements to perform the job.
  • 5-10 years prior experience as a carpenter in a commercialenvironment, preferably with hotel/cruise line experience andwith a minimum of 2 year in a supervisory capacity.Basic knowledge of upholstering/furniture building, carpeting,painting & wallpapering, and textiles.
Other Skills:
  • Computer Skills-Working knowledge of personal computerswithin a Windows environment with e-mail, Microsoft Word,Excel, and AMOS preferred as well as related printers andequipment.
  • Active Listening–listening towhat other people are sayingand asking appropriate questions for clarification.
Language Requirements:
  • Ability to speak clearly, distinctly and cordially with guestsand employees.
  • Ability to speak and read English fluently, analyzes andinterpret procedure manuals and memos, technical procedures orgovernmental regulations. Ability to prepare basic reports andbusiness correspondence. Ability to effectively presentinformation and respond to questions from groups of employeesand guests.
  • Ability tospeak additional language(s) is desirable.

  • All shipboard employees must be physically able to participatein emergency life saving procedures and drills. Full use/range ofmotion of arm and legs as well as full visual, verbal and hearingabilities are required to receive and give instructions in the eventof an emergency requiring thelowering of a life boat.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include closevision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception andthe ability to adjust focus.
Working Conditions:
While performing the duties of this job, the employeemay at times works in outsideweather conditions and is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions. Thenoise level in the work environment is usually moderate
