Youth Program Manager

POSITION SUMMARY

Manages the shipboard youth recreational, edutainment, entertainment and social programs
geared for ages 6 months -17 years.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

All duties and responsibilities are to be performed in accordance with the principles of Celebrity
Cruise’s STAR Program’s Credo, SQM standards, USPH guidelines, environmental, and safety
policies.
Each shipboard employee may be required to perform all functions in various venues
throughout the ship.
In accordance with Celebrity Cruises’s STAR Program’s Credo, each employee conducts
oneself in a professional and courteous manner at all times. This consists of physical and
verbal interactions with guests or fellow shipboard employees and/or in the presence of
guest contact and crew areas.
1. Manages the financial aspects of the Youth Program operation, including the
successful identification of expense reduction through cost control. Ensures
marketing efforts reach guests to maximize participation of the Youth Program
operation. Records production and operational data on specified forms. Analyzes
operational problems such as over production, theft, and establishes controls.
Keeps inventory of music library. Oversees the point of sale functions to ensure
the posting and reconciliation processes are conducted according to established
procedures. Reviews the overtime requests against production levels to determine
appropriate needs and approves amounts accordingly. Reviews and approves
timesheets. Prepares a variety of reports and letters utilizing personal computer
system and equipment.
2. Meets with the Cruise Director and staff, to review the requirements of the cruise
activities and time frames. Reviews schedules to estimate time and staff
requirements to ensure coverage. Meets with subordinate staff to review guest
comments to implement revisions and improvements. Develops cruise-by-cruise
goals and long-term strategies for the assigned vessel in conjunction with the
relief Youth Program Managers for the ongoing improvement of the Youth
Program. Monitors the status of the Balanced Score Card targets to meet
assigned goals.
3. Maintains costs at reasonable levels without affecting quality and standards.
Reviews and approves the requisitions. Requires the items be requisitioned in
correct quantities, within acceptable time frames and in accordance with
established control procedures. Conducts workstation spot checks to ensure items
are correctly stored to minimize deterioration and waste.
4. Maintains a high degree of “floor presence” to observe the operations and to
maximize security and safety issues while providing an entertaining and age
appropriate environment. Monitors the Youth Program staff to ensure procedures
and services are performed in accordance with STAR. Monitors set-up is
performed on time and adequate supplies are prepared. Inspects activity centers,
workstations, work areas, equipment, etc. to ensure efficient service, safety,
cleanliness and conformance to standards.
5. Monitors and manages the various activity centers and functions. Monitors the
assignment of duties and responsibilities to employees. Observes and evaluates
employees and work procedures to ensure quality standards and service is met.
Reviews personnel actions such as new hire requests and discharges, to ensure
proper staffing.
6. Trains and monitors all levels of Youth Staff positions for proper skill and
service. Conducts training for new activities, techniques, equipment, etc.
Provides on-the-job training to strengthen their current performance and
preparation for possible advancement to promotional positions. Monitors the
daily activities to ensure productivity. Reviews work schedules and time records.
Recommends measures to improve work procedures and employee performance
to increase quality of services and job safety.
7. Monitors at all times, safety and USPH procedures for sanitation and cleanliness.
Monitors activity centers, workstations and staff for adherence to those
procedures. Enforces and follows USPH cleaning procedures for work surfaces,
all related equipment and utensils. Monitors the assembly of the activity centers
for the next shift. This includes the cleaning and preparation.
8. Answers inquiries pertaining to Youth Program services and general information.
Responds to escalated guest complaints in a considerate, professional and positive
manner by showing concern and listening actively. Takes ownership of guest
concerns, by following-up and ensuring complaints are resolved to the guest’s
satisfaction.
9. Participates as master of ceremonies or host for activities, events, and shows.
10. Manages and participates in boarding procedures by disseminating information
regarding the Youth Program, Youth Evacuation Plan, and directing and escorting
guests to staterooms. Monitors and follows the detailed safety and security
measures of the Youth Evacuation Plan in the event of an emergency while
children are under the supervision of the Youth Staff. Utilizes good judgment
and pays close attention to all details when escorting children to the parents or
guardians in the assigned muster stations. Trains staff in all procedures.
11. Monitors and participates in the activities based on the ages and the needs of the
youth assigned to participate in the scheduled activity. Organizes and leads a
variety of established age appropriate activities. Assists youths of all ages with
computer operation, instruction and navigation, etc.
12. Acts as a role model for the youth with regard to leadership, friendliness,
diplomacy, honesty, fair play, sportsmanship and open-mindedness. Exercises
discretion and good judgment when interacting with the children. Maintains a
constant awareness of the children’s whereabouts and their safety. Intervenes
when a conflict arises or when a child needs extra attention or assistance in order
to enjoy the activities. Responds to any type of emergency.
13. Directs children in eating, resting, and toileting. Helps children develop habits of
caring for own clothing and picking up and putting away toys and books.
Maintains discipline within assigned group to ensure safety precautions are
followed. Serves meals and refreshments to children and regulates rest periods.
14. Keeps current on youth trends regarding music, dance crazes, fads, computer
games, reading materials and physical activities.
15. Attends meetings, training activities, courses and all other work-related activities
as required.
16. Performs related duties as required. This position description in no way states or
implies that these are the only duties to be performed by the shipboard employee
occupying this position. Shipboard employees will be required to perform any
other job-related duties assigned by their supervisor or management.

FINANCIAL RESPONSIBILITIES

Financial responsibilities for budget, expenses and/or achievement of revenue targets.
§ This position is responsible for cost containment through the proper use, handling and
maintenance of records, reports, supplies and equipment.
§ Monitor all Youth Program related budgets.

MOTIVATIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES

People management responsibilities to ensure optimal performance of the function.
§ Monitors and supervises the job performance of the Youth Counselors. Monitors the
assignment of duties and responsibilities of his/her staff. Observes and evaluates them
and their work procedures to ensure quality standards and service are met. Makes
recommendations regarding personnel actions such as new hire requests and discharges,
to ensure adequate and continuous staffing. Inspects workstations, work areas,
equipment, etc. to ensure efficient service and conformance to standards.
§ Mentors, develops and provides on-the-job training to his/her staff to strengthen their
current performance and preparation for future advancement.

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum hiring, language and physical requirements to perform the job.

Hiring Requirements:

o Bachelor’s degree in education, recreation or related field from an accredited
university or college or the international equivalent.
o Five to seven years experience managing recreational activities of large groups of
youth, ages 3 -17 years.
o Ability to capture and manage the attention of a large group of people with
effective and courteous microphone techniques to serve as host or master of
ceremonies. Experience working in school sponsored youth groups, YMCA,
camps or similar positions preferred. Infant and child CPR certification and life
saving certification from the American Red Cross or similar certifying
organization preferred.
o Ability to mediate, diffuse and/or resolve problems and negotiate resolutions.
o Ability to design creative activities while containing costs.
o Demonstrated aptitude for the financial aspects of a youth recreation operation,
including the successful identification of expense reduction through cost control.
Demonstrated aptitude for the management of headcount within assigned area, as
it relates to and supports the business needs of the vessel.
o Knowledge of principles and processes for providing customer and personal
service including needs assessment, problem resolution and achievement of
quality service standards.

o Knowledge of policies and practices involved in the human resources function.
o Ability to manage the international staff in a positive and productive manner by
motivating, developing and managing employees as they work.
o Ability to utilize and administer the disciplinary action process through coaching
and counseling to improve performance or terminate employment.
o Ability to work positively and cooperatively in a diverse team environment to
meet overall established time frames for the entire youth recreation operation.
o Ability to communicate tactfully with department heads, coworkers and other
shipboard employees to resolve problems and negotiate resolutions.
o Working knowledge of computers, internet access, and the ability to navigate
within a variety software packages such as Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.

In addition to the stated hiring requirements, internal candidates are required to fulfill the following:
§ Completion of at least one Youth Counselor contract with a performance rating of
satisfactory or above along with demonstrated leadership skills.

Language Requirements:

§ Ability to speak English clearly, distinctly and cordially with guests.
§ Ability to read and write English in order to understand and interpret written procedures.
This includes the ability to give and receive instructions in written and verbal forms and
to effectively present information and respond to questions from guests, supervisors and
co-workers.
§ Ability to speak additional languages such as Spanish, French or German preferred.
Physical Requirements:
§ While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand;
walk; use hands to touch, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; talk or hear; and
taste or smell. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color
vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus. While performing
the duties of this job the employee at times works in outside weather conditions that are
extreme. These include exposure to wet and/or humid conditions.
§ All shipboard employees must be physically able to participate in emergency life saving
procedures and drills. Full use and range of arms and legs as well as full visual, verbal
and hearing abilities are required to receive and give instructions in the event of an
emergency including the lowering of lifeboats. Ability to lift and/or move up to 50
pounds.
